Not only fish is excellent food at sea, bread is not inferior, and some plants are already a classic of the menu of great sailors – this is how sea wolves eat.
Many travellers, including Poles, have undertaken long-distance sea voyages. To go around the world, to retrace Magellan’s path, to cross oceans and so on. – the challenges are many. Each time the expedition of a daredevil arouses fascination. We ask about the time of the journey, about his determination, about why he decided to set out to sea. But we forget to ask about what they took to eat. And what do they usually take? And is it only canned food?
One of the basic components of the diet is bread. While on a cruise, it is impossible to cook or bake large meals. At best, if the weather permits, you can heat up some soup. Also for a trip it is worth equipping yourself with something durable and nutritious, such thing is bread and not just any bread. In 2019, when Polish traveler Rafal Moszczynski was embarking on his journey that would last 150 days, the sailor announced that one of the meals he packed was military bread
“The bread I take with me is the highest quality good dark military bread in 400-gram portions, packed in a special two-compartment package. After about six months, all you have to do is refresh the loaf by heating it in warm water.”
That turns out to be scarce. On long voyages, meat will simply spoil very quickly, so long-term food is the best option. So you can put, at most, dried sausage in your equipment. The rest is mostly canned food, although there is a way around that as well.
On a cruise, you take food that will last a long time. However, we live in such times that even if something theoretically should spoil quickly, the right protections keep such food fresh even though the expiration date has passed. One way of preserving food for longer is freeze-drying. This is special packaging that regulates the amount of heat that enters the frozen food. Well-packaged food can last for several years.
You can guess that apples, pears, bananas, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower will not be found on a traveler’s yacht. The reason was given above – such products will spoil quickly. But as we also mentioned, thanks to the freeze-drying method it is possible to store many food items. The only downside is that we would have to get used to the lack of fresh taste and smell, but we can still provide ourselves with nutritional values. And not only through fruits and vegetables. Today, many travelers take their basic vitamins in the form of powders and pills.
It may surprise you, but travelers of all kinds have always supported the chocolate industry quite strongly. On a yacht, you won’t find any exquisite desserts, but almost every sailor will have chocolate in their assortment, the properties of which are irreplaceable. And not just one or two bars, but a whole wagonload.
Of course, the assortment can not lack water. Water is a basic component of the diet, but where to get it from? Swimming in the oceans and seas does nothing, because it is salt water, not fresh. Several hundred liters of water are therefore prepared in sealed bottles of 1.5 liters or 5 liters
